For patrol officers not accustomed to working with a police canine it can be difficult to know his/her role, how to preserve scenes and how to avoid being bitten.
Working Alongside Police K9 is designed to provide useful information to law enforcement patrol officers who find themselves on the scene with a police K9, whether from their department or a neighboring jurisdiction. Whether it be a drug sniff on a traffic stop, a search for a missing child or wanted fugitive, or a dog release following a vehicle pursuit, officers need to know how to work effectively and safely alongside a working police dog.
What are your duties as a cover officer? How do you avoid contaminating the scene before the dog arrives? As a supervisor, or the police chief or sheriff, what is your liability for the actions of the dog? Learn these subjects and more in this unique 50-minute virtual, live training session. Taught by highly-experienced dog handler and K9 division supervisor Captain Jason Thomas of the Evansville (IN) Police Department, this training is FREE for PASLEE members and just $15.00 for non-members. To become a member, visit www.paslee.org and join with a “buddy” and both receive half off 2025 membership for a limited time.

PIO for Small Departments is designed to introduce the basics of media relations to police chiefs and sheriffs who need to serve as their agency’s Public Information Officer (PIO). This session will help prepare law enforcement executives of smaller departments with the skills they need to communicate effectively with the local newspaper, or national media during a critical incident. This is part of a series. Attend one or all, as desired. The instructor for this event is Barb Roethler, who worked many years in the news media as well as teaching media relations at the School of Police Staff & Command at Eastern Michigan University for the past ten years. Well respected in Michigan, Barb has taught hundreds of chiefs of police how to work effectively with local, state and national news outlets.
