Governor Mike DeWine has taken decisive action to combat the opioid crisis in Ohio. Recently, Gov. DeWine banned the sale and use of nine synthetic opioids, known as nitazenes, which are stronger than fentanyl and have been linked to a rise in overdoses.

These man-made opioids were never approved for medical use and are increasingly found in illegal drugs across the state. On Tuesday, Gov. DeWine signed an executive order authorizing the Ohio Board of Pharmacy to classify these nine synthetic opioids as Schedule I controlled substances, effectively banning their sale and use.

"These are extremely dangerous substances being designed by clandestine chemists in an attempt to skirt the law while keeping them highly addictive," said Gov. DeWine.

Developed decades ago as potential alternatives to morphine, nitazenes never received medical approval and pose a significant threat to public health.
