Then come back and read this.
Within minutes, people are pausing it, replaying it, slowing it down, and offering opinions about what the officers should have done differently.
What often gets lost is what it was actually like to be there.
On Mother's Day, officers responded to a domestic disturbance. Before they arrived, the call escalated. The suspect was intoxicated, armed with a knife, and threatening his mother.
When officers entered the home, they found a 62-year-old woman lying on the floor, covered in blood. Her 28-year-old son stood over her, holding a knife.
The officers immediately began giving commands.
The officers don't rush him, and they don't immediately fire their weapons. Instead, they issue commands, create distance, and back away, seemingly doing everything they can to draw him away from his mother and to allow him to make a different decision.
Unfortunately, he didn't. He turned back toward his mother and continued the attack.
That's one of the realities of policing that many people never see.
Not every call presents officers with a good option. Sometimes every available option carries significant risk, and every possible outcome is tragic. There wasn't a perfect answer, only the decision the officers believed gave that woman the best chance to survive.

The screams. The blood. The confusion. You're trying to process what you're seeing while, at the very same time, deciding what has to happen next.
There isn't time to stop and think. There isn't time to phone a friend, call your lawyer, or worry about how your actions will be analyzed frame by frame on social media a month later. There is only the moment.
No policy manual can account for every situation police officers will encounter. Every home is different. Every victim is different. Every suspect is different. Every set of circumstances is different.
One of the greatest challenges facing police departments today is that many agencies don't have the funding, staffing, or manpower to train as much as they know they should. That's not an excuse. It's simply the reality. Training develops judgment, communication, and decision-making, but it can never create a script for every situation an officer may face.
I don't believe those officers walked into that house expecting to shoot someone on Mother's Day. I believe they walked in hoping they could convince a man to drop the knife. Instead, they found themselves trying to stop a murder already in progress.
Long after the news cameras are gone and the headlines disappear, everyone else will move on.
They'll remember the blood, the screams, the smell, and the realization that no matter what happened next, someone's family would never be the same. Those memories don't disappear when the shift ends.
Based on the body camera footage, these officers showed restraint when possible. They gave commands. They created distance. They tried to avoid using deadly force. When that was no longer enough to stop the attack, they acted.
While the public will eventually move on to the next story, I suspect these officers will carry the memories of that Mother's Day for the rest of their lives.
