Ohio School Safety Center expands security with Camera Trailer Program

(COLUMBUS, Ohio) – The Ohio School Safety Center (OSSC) has expanded its Camera Trailer Program, an initiative designed to enhance situational awareness and security at large-scale school events across the state. The OSSC currently operates eight mobile camera trailers that schools can request for use during major events.

In October, OSSC initially rolled out the Camera Trailer Program. Since then, the center has deployed camera trailers at 13 school events statewide. The trailers provide elevated, wide-angle views of outdoor event spaces, allowing school officials and law enforcement to monitor crowd activity, identify potential safety concerns, and respond quickly to incidents.

"Offering mobile camera trailers to our K–12 schools enhances safety by giving districts flexible, real-time tools to monitor what's happening on school grounds and respond quickly to potential concerns,” said Ohio Governor Mike DeWine.

The program allows K-12 schools to request access to mobile camera trailers at no cost, offering real time surveillance capabilities for events such as sporting competitions, festivals, graduations, and other high-attendance gatherings.

“When we combine a community’s willingness to see something, say something, and do something with the enhanced visibility of OSSC camera trailers, we create a safer learning environment for every student and staff member,” said OSSC Executive Director Emily Torok. “These tools don’t replace people—they empower them. Together, we are turning vigilance into prevention.”

The Camera Trailer Program represents a strategic investment in preventive safety measures, giving schools access to advanced tools that support safe and well-managed events. By offering the service at no cost, OSSC removes barriers to safety and promotes equitable access to critical resources for schools across Ohio.

“The camera trailers are intended for temporary increased observation during larger events not as a long-term solution for schools,” said Torok. “By testing them out, schools can decide if they need or want a similar setup that could be purchased with grant funds when available.”
