In a recent conference call, Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Director Kash Patel spoke about incorporating “UFC Training” as a way to improve the Physical Fitness of his employees.
This is a great idea! Just as it was back in 1997 when we did the same in our department, approving Ground Defense (based on Brazilian Jiu Jitsu & Submission Wrestling techniques), as well as Striking (based on Boxing & Muay Thai). This training was successfully incorporated at both the Academy and In Service level & became a tool for both Use of Force training & Physical Fitness.
How did we do this back then? Well, it began with many of those who taught me, dedicated DT instructors such as Tom Conlin, Joe Gemma, & Rich Davis, having the vision to evolve from the way it had always been done. We had so many great instructors working in the Academy, as well as DT Instructors training their squads, who dedicated their time off to what we now call “MMA”. This was the stuff myself and many others would eat and breath for our entire careers.
Remember, this was the late 90s when all of this was still niche. At the time, the UFC wasn’t even allowed on cable, so the thought of training Cops in techniques associated with what was being referred to as “No Holds Barred” didn’t exactly sit well with the higher ups. But we worked within the parameters of our Use of Force Policy and went for it.
Fast forward to today. What we accomplished with our Defensive Tactics program in the late 90s through the mid 2010s, is the basis for our hashtag#documentary hashtag#film WRIST LOCK: THE MARTIAL ARTS’ INFLUENCE ON POLICE USE OF FORCE.
Many of the subjects in the film worked with me tirelessly for over two and a half decades to give our Cops the tools to survive through instruction and reality based training, including Jon Gentile, Mike Bland , Marcus Martin, Anthony R. Brown, & Bob Hindi.
The film features segments with world class trainers such as Tony Blauer, Erik Paulson, Jared Wihongi, Ray Beshirs, Forrest Griffin & Betsy Brantner Smith, as well as timely commentary from Jonathan Sheinberg, MD, FACC on the importance of Physical Fitness and Mental Health in Law Enforcement.
Whether you are a Law Enforcement Officer, looking to become one, or simply interested in how Cops are trained in Use of Force, there is a ton to gain by watching WRIST LOCK.
Our one of a kind film is available now on Amazon, Apple TV, Microsoft Store, Google Play, Tubi, Plex, Hoopla, Vudu, & more.
Want to show the film to your entire department? You can license WRIST LOCK as part of the PTSD911 Tool Kit (Link in the comments).
