OACP President Robert Butler:
New data from the CBS News Crime Unit reveals a horrifying reality: at least 50 law enforcement officers have already been shot in ambush attacks so far this year. This rise in deliberate violence against those sworn to serve is utterly disgusting and unacceptable.
OACP continues to work with Ohio legislators on HB 20, which increases penalties for obstructing first responders, deterring dangerous interference that often escalates situations, and creates a safer environment for our officers to perform their duties. We also strongly support initiatives like Senator Bernie Moreno's proposed "Larry Henderson Act," which aims to make targeting first responders a federal crime, clearly showing that such acts will be met with severe consequences. A version of this bill is also being considered in Ohio by Representative Cindy Abrams and Phil Plummer.
We must act now, through legislation, to unequivocally support and protect those who bravely serve our communities.
