𝙊𝙝𝙞𝙤 𝙇𝙖𝙬𝙢𝙖𝙠𝙚𝙧𝙨 𝘾𝙖𝙣’𝙩 𝙃𝙖𝙫𝙚 𝙄𝙩 𝘽𝙤𝙩𝙝 𝙒𝙖𝙮𝙨—𝙁𝙪𝙣𝙙 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙏𝙧𝙖𝙞𝙣𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙤𝙧 𝙊𝙬𝙣 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝘾𝙤𝙣𝙨𝙚𝙦𝙪𝙚𝙣𝙘𝙚𝙨.

Continuing Professional Training (CPT) is the backbone of professional, accountable policing in Ohio. It ensures officers stay current on laws, tactics, mental health response, and use-of-force standards. This isn’t optional training—it’s essential.

That’s why Ohio invested $𝟴𝟬 𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗼𝗻 in CPT during the last biennium. It was a major step forward in giving law enforcement the tools they need to serve their communities with excellence.

Now? Some legislators want to roll that back—proposing a $𝟭𝟱 𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗰𝘂𝘁 in CPT funding. Worse yet, they want to 𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗖𝗣𝗧 𝗳𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗹𝘆 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗰𝗮𝗺𝗽𝘂𝘀 𝗽𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝗱𝗲𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 at Ohio's public colleges and universities.

Think about that for a second.

Imagine your son or daughter attending one of these campuses—and the police officers responsible for their safety being denied critical training because the state decided they’re not worth the investment. It’s unacceptable.

College and university police departments 𝑎𝑟𝑒 law enforcement. They handle violent crime, mental health calls, complex investigations—and they often provide mutual aid to surrounding police departments. They train, respond, and serve just like any other agency.

So why would we 𝑒𝑥𝑐𝑙𝑢𝑑𝑒 them from the very training programs we insist are necessary for professionalism and accountability?

Let’s be clear: this isn’t just a budgeting issue—it’s a dangerous shift in priorities. You don’t build better policing by scaling back training. You don’t raise standards by stripping support. And you don’t protect communities—or campuses—by pretending some officers matter less than others.

𝗜𝗳 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘃𝗼𝘁𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗿𝗲𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗲 𝗖𝗣𝗧 𝗳𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗰𝗮𝗺𝗽𝘂𝘀 𝗽𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗰𝗲, 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗼𝘄𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘃𝗼𝘁𝗲—𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗲𝗾𝘂𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗳𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗼𝘄.

We need more training. Not less. More investment. Not excuses.

And we need lawmakers who actually back public safety with their votes—not just their soundbites.

I urge every resident, parent, and public safety professional to contact their legislators and demand full funding for CPT—𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗼𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗲𝗿𝘀 in all communities, including our campuses.
