Continuing Professional Training (CPT) is the backbone of professional, accountable policing in Ohio. It ensures officers stay current on laws, tactics, mental health response, and use-of-force standards. This isnโ€™t optional trainingโ€”itโ€™s essential.

Thatโ€™s why Ohio invested $๐Ÿด๐Ÿฌ ๐—บ๐—ถ๐—น๐—น๐—ถ๐—ผ๐—ป in CPT during the last biennium. It was a major step forward in giving law enforcement the tools they need to serve their communities with excellence.

Now? Some legislators want to roll that backโ€”proposing a $๐Ÿญ๐Ÿฑ ๐—บ๐—ถ๐—น๐—น๐—ถ๐—ผ๐—ป ๐—ฐ๐˜‚๐˜ in CPT funding. Worse yet, they want to ๐—ฒ๐—น๐—ถ๐—บ๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ฎ๐˜๐—ฒ ๐—–๐—ฃ๐—ง ๐—ณ๐˜‚๐—ป๐—ฑ๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด ๐—ฒ๐—ป๐˜๐—ถ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ๐—น๐˜† ๐—ณ๐—ผ๐—ฟ ๐—ฐ๐—ฎ๐—บ๐—ฝ๐˜‚๐˜€ ๐—ฝ๐—ผ๐—น๐—ถ๐—ฐ๐—ฒ ๐—ฑ๐—ฒ๐—ฝ๐—ฎ๐—ฟ๐˜๐—บ๐—ฒ๐—ป๐˜๐˜€ at Ohio's public colleges and universities.

Think about that for a second.

Imagine your son or daughter attending one of these campusesโ€”and the police officers responsible for their safety being denied critical training because the state decided theyโ€™re not worth the investment. Itโ€™s unacceptable.

College and university police departments ๐‘Ž๐‘Ÿ๐‘’ law enforcement. They handle violent crime, mental health calls, complex investigationsโ€”and they often provide mutual aid to surrounding police departments. They train, respond, and serve just like any other agency.

So why would we ๐‘’๐‘ฅ๐‘๐‘™๐‘ข๐‘‘๐‘’ them from the very training programs we insist are necessary for professionalism and accountability?

Letโ€™s be clear: this isnโ€™t just a budgeting issueโ€”itโ€™s a dangerous shift in priorities. You donโ€™t build better policing by scaling back training. You donโ€™t raise standards by stripping support. And you donโ€™t protect communitiesโ€”or campusesโ€”by pretending some officers matter less than others.

We need more training. Not less. More investment. Not excuses.

And we need lawmakers who actually back public safety with their votesโ€”not just their soundbites.

I urge every resident, parent, and public safety professional to contact their legislators and demand full funding for CPTโ€”๐—ณ๐—ผ๐—ฟ ๐—ฎ๐—น๐—น ๐—ผ๐—ณ๐—ณ๐—ถ๐—ฐ๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐˜€ in all communities, including our campuses.

๐Ÿ‘‰ Want to know who voted for and against this bill? You should.

Hereโ€™s the full vote breakdown:

Letโ€™s stop talking about โ€œbetter policingโ€ and actually invest in it.
